A seminar in Vung Tau

Over the last few days of May, while the kids are eagerly preparing for their summer holidays after months and months of studying and cramming for exams, our team from One Body Village took a journey out to host a seminar for 100 year 8 students in Vung Tau, focusing on ways to self protect themselves from being at risk of child abuse.

Because the kids were patient and had been ready to partake in this seminar from the wee early hours, they actively joined in on the conversation presented by trained psychologist Duy Nguyen, resulting in positive results. The message about protecting one self was able to be passed on successfully.

Mindfulness Exercises

Recently, we has just taught the children about mindfulness exercises and how to practice. The first step seemed difficult to them since they hardly focused on the meditation. At first, some said that the ringing bell we rang to start practising gave them a headache, some complained that they felt asleep when sat down and closed their eyes in nearly 2 minutes.

The girls slowly came around and enjoy this kind of practice now. We hope that the exercises will soon show its benefits to the children and help them to improve their attention, develop their skills to regulate emotions and to have positive outlook.

Lord, please give us enough patience and open mind to guide the little girls growing up to maturity in Your Love.

Study English_Play Performance

For our girls, English is so hard to learn however learning English is interesting as well. At first, it is an awful bore for them to sit an hour to study English even though we let them watch the English subtitled cartoon. But now, the girls are really excited to learn English with a different way that is doing narration of the English stories and play performace in groups.

Learning by heart the conversations in a English story and role-play

And this is rehearsal by an another group

Charity in action

On the 12th of June 2016, the pastoral sectors within the Apostolic Vicariate of Phnom Penh carried out charity in action as part of the Jubilee Year of Mercy initiatives in order to put into practice the social doctrines of the Church. While many youth groups visited the sick and the disable, younger ones gathered in Boeung Tumpun Church to be taught about the role of charity practicing in Catholic life.

Our OBV teenagers attented the meeting and learned that charity is one of critical part of our catholic missions. So we should do charitable works as putting our Love of Jesus in Action.

It was precious gift for us the child carers to see their eager faces when they participated in such activities and other charitible works such as blood giving and donating food and rice etc. We have great hope that the girls could grow up and brought this spirit along wherever the future lead them to.

This year on Children's Day, the 1st of June, our OBV house in Vietnam was one long continuous celebration, as the girls brought in all their awards and achievements throughout the year, a result of all their hard work and endless nights of studying. The girls continue to grow and mature, with the continual love and support of their new adopted family.

Thank you always to all our supporters and extended family in providing for the children to have a chance at an education where they can excel in life.
We love our OBV children and wish you a happy Children's Day!

Everybody in our house beamed with pride when our games came home with certificates of merit from their school. Our girls tried their hardest this year, is it beause Father Martino promised a summer vacation for those with high scores? Or did you try your hardest so Mother N would not be overstressed? It seems as the girls grow older, they are more self aware of what their futures hold, and how to work to achieve them.

Family Indoor Game

June was coming with sultry morning as usual, yet come also some showery rains in the afternoon that break the morning heat. Such sudden change of weather on the same day was getting the kids sick easily, so they have to stay inside the house for playing after finishing their homework.

Lining up for martial moves (punching practice)

Playing the game "catching ball with small wash-tub''

Watching our 16 girls absorbed in playing in such cramped space and never complain about that make us wish we could do better and could afford them a really playground.

Begin again…

After nearly two years being carefully brought up at OBV’s house, this little girl started to learn many things including memorizing letters and numbers; and the whole family was happy and less worried when everything for her seemed to be less hard. However, within three months staying at her own family, every difficulty has now come back. Namely, she forgets almost all the numbers, letter and even the good habits she used to gain before. So everything has to begin again…

International Children's Day

The girls spent an International children’s day off in a simple way, not going out for getting tired and worn out by outdoor game as usual. In the morning, the older girls were heading into the kitchen and learning how to cook Vietnamese crab noodle soup with Grandma Ut, the rest ones "explored" the electric mosquito trap which did not work and was forgotten a year ago.

A new library for OBV

To prepare for summertime reading, OBV already had intentions to re-stock the library. All the current books in the library, the girls have almost finished reading! Before we could make it happen, a special package arrived from one of our beloved supporters: a box of new books!

Her name is Van, her roots are from North Vietnam. After hearing about the children, she contacted us said she wanted to donate books for them to enrich themselves. Just a few months earlier she had sent 100 brand new exercise books for the girls' schooling needs, and today we've recieved this box of goodies. To make it extra special, she had carefully branded each book with the words 'OBV library'.
And so the girls have new books for their summertime reading, with Ms. Van promising to update the books every 6 months, which will ensure they always have something new to read.

Thank you Ms. Van, for your unwaivering support, despite living so far away. We hope you will come visit us one day, so that we, and the children, can thank you personally for your kind and generous gifts.
